It was one of 20 similar installations in “Wing V” of the country’s Mintueman ICBM force. Land-based ICBMs played a vital role in American strategic policy during the Cold War. With the Navy’s sea-based ballistic missile fleet and the Air Force’s bomber fleet, they were part of the “Triad,” the three major weapons systems that gave force to the concept of the strategic deterrence.
